The Edit Movie button calls up a filmstrip timeline. It doesnвЂ™t give any scope for layout changes, but the selection of predefined styles is reasonably extensive.

This same Edit Style interface is used in the full MyDVD. The latter calls upon a subset of the full MyDVD authoring softwareвЂ™s abilities, offering options to change text styles, background image, button frame and music track. Recording direct to disc can either create a video-only piece, or you can add menus in a variety of editable styles. YouвЂ™re also given the option to re-edit an OpenDVD disc youвЂ™ve already created using MyDVD, or call up CinePlayer, SonicвЂ™s DVD and VideoCD-playing software. Create Project offers DVD authoring in DVD, DVD+VR or VideoCD formats, and Direct-to-Disc calls up a simple wizard to let you acquire footage from your video-capture device and burn it straight to disc. This takes you out of the descriptive front end to the MyDVD app itself. The main meal is still the Video section, though.

Easy Archive also lets you know how many discs of each type your chosen files will require. ThereвЂ™s even a category for sniffing out the DVR-MS files created by Windows XP MCEвЂ™s TV recording. We found this worked better than the music scanning in the audio section, taking a much more reasonable time to find our files. ThereвЂ™s a Quick Scan option here as well, which will search out files in a specific category on a given drive. It also has the useful ability to normalise volume across tracks.Д®asy Archive adds tools to help you make a backup of specific file types to disc, such as Outlook PSTs or your music and video collections. The ripper will retrieve CD track names online, and can compress to MP3 at up to 320Kb/sec using the LAME encoder, or CD-quality WAV. However, this stalled on our test PC, never completing the scan. The first two of these offer the option to scan your hard disks for media. Under the Audio section, separate icons walk you through creating an audio CD for your car, a CD jukebox music collection using formats such as MP3 and WMA, or ripping audio CDs to MP3. There are separate sections for audio tasks, disc copying, data file activities, and the video functions that lie at the heart of MyDVD itself. The main interface aggregates the different disc-related functions into one place. ThereвЂ™s a cheaper non-Deluxe version, without the audio ripping and writing capabilities of RecordNow!, and a more expensive Suite version that includes system backup and disaster-recovery software. It incorporates MyDVD Deluxe 6, RecordNow! Deluxe 7, CinePlayer 2, Drive Letter Access 4.92, and Express Labeler 1. The Deluxe version sits in the middle of a range of three.
